IRD e-Services Login Sri Lanka — How to Access, File & Pay Tax Online (2025/2026)

Lal Kumarasiri B.A |Chartered Accountant|ACA|MAAT Avatar

The IRD e-Services portal — accessed at eservices.ird.gov.lk — is the official online system for all tax matters in Sri Lanka. From here you can file income tax returns, view your tax balance, make payments, claim refunds, and check APIT deductions made by your employer.

Since Y/A 2023/2024, e-filing of income tax returns is mandatory under Section 113(1)(B) of the Inland Revenue Act No. 24 of 2017. This means you cannot file a paper return — it must be done through the portal.

This guide explains exactly how to log in, what you need, and how to navigate the system — written by the Chartered Accountants at GDP Consultants.

What You Need Before You Log In

To access IRD e-Services, you need:

  1. TIN (Taxpayer Identification Number) — your unique tax ID issued by the IRD. If you don’t have one yet, register for a TIN first →
  2. IRD PIN — a personal password issued by the IRD when you registered. If you haven’t activated it, see the section on getting a PIN below.
  3. A computer or smartphone with internet access
  4. The correct URL — always use https://www.ird.gov.lk and navigate from there. Do not use unofficial websites.

How to Log In to IRD e-Services — Step by Step

Step 1: Go to the official IRD website

Open your browser and go to: https://www.ird.gov.lk

Click “e-Services” in the top menu bar, then select “Access to e-Services”.

Always use the official IRD website. Avoid clicking login links from emails or WhatsApp messages — these may be phishing attempts.

Step 2: Choose your taxpayer type

You will see two options:

  • Individual Taxpayer — for salaried employees, freelancers, or anyone filing a personal income tax return
  • Corporate Taxpayer — for companies, or staff logging in on behalf of a company

Select the appropriate option and click “Proceed to Login”.

Step 3: Enter your credentials

For Individual Taxpayers:

  • Enter your TIN (your Taxpayer Identification Number)
  • Enter your IRD PIN (your personal password)
  • Type the captcha text shown on screen
  • Click Login

For Corporate Taxpayers / Staff:

  • Enter your SSID (Special Staff Identifier assigned by your company)
  • Enter your IRD PIN
  • Enter your Company TIN
  • Type the captcha and click Login

Note: If you are a tax agent or accountant filing on behalf of a client, use your agent SSID — not your personal TIN. You must be authorised by the client company before you can access their account.

Step 4: Navigate the dashboard

Once logged in, you will see your taxpayer dashboard. From here you can:

  • File Returns — submit your income tax return for the relevant Year of Assessment
  • View Tax Balance — check what you owe or if you have a credit
  • Make Payments — pay income tax, APIT, or other dues
  • Request a Refund — claim back overpaid tax
  • View APIT Credits — see how much your employer has deducted and remitted on your behalf
  • Update Profile — change your address, email, or contact details

How to Get or Reset Your IRD PIN

If you have never logged in before or have forgotten your PIN:

First-time users (received TIN recently):

When you registered for your TIN, the IRD sent a one-time PIN to your email address. Use this to log in for the first time. You will be asked to change it to a personal password immediately.

Forgot your PIN:

  1. Go to https://www.ird.gov.lk → e-Services → Access to e-Services
  2. Click “PIN Request” or “Forgot PIN”
  3. Enter your TIN and NIC number to verify your identity
  4. A new PIN will be sent to your registered email address

If your registered email is no longer accessible, visit your nearest IRD Regional Office in person with your NIC to request a PIN reset.

Common Login Problems and Fixes

“Invalid TIN or PIN” error
Double-check that you’re entering your TIN (not your NIC number) and the PIN sent to your email. TINs do not contain dashes or spaces.

Captcha not loading
Try a different browser (Chrome or Firefox work best). Clear your browser cache and cookies. Avoid Internet Explorer.

Account locked after multiple failed attempts
Contact IRD on 1944 or visit your nearest regional office to unlock.

Can’t find APIT credits from employer
Your employer must submit and pay APIT to the IRD before it appears in your account. If credits are missing, ask your HR or payroll department to confirm submission.

Page not loading / portal down
The IRD portal occasionally undergoes maintenance. Try again after a few hours, or call 1944 to confirm portal status.

Authorising a Tax Agent to File on Your Behalf

If you want a tax agent or accountant (such as GDP Consultants) to file your return for you:

  1. Log in to your IRD e-Services account
  2. Go to “Authorise Tax Agent”
  3. Enter the tax agent’s TIN
  4. Confirm the authorisation

Once authorised, your agent can access your account and file on your behalf without needing your personal PIN.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the IRD e-Services portal available 24/7?
Generally yes, though occasional maintenance windows apply (usually late nights or weekends). Check ird.gov.lk for notices.

Can I file my return from a mobile phone?
Yes. The portal works on mobile browsers. There is no dedicated app — use your mobile browser and navigate to ird.gov.lk.

What if I made an error in my filed return?
You can submit an amended return through the same portal. Contact IRD on 1944 for guidance if the assessment year is already closed.

Can my employer file on my behalf?
No. Employers file APIT (monthly deductions) — but the annual income tax return must be filed by you personally, or by an authorised tax agent.
